For 61 years, the U.S. Embassy on Paseo de la Reforma stood as one of the capital’s most recognizable diplomatic landmarks—a bastion of bilateral history framed by skyscrapers, marches, political transitions and the evolving rhythm of a city that never stops reinventing itself. Today, that chapter quietly closes. The iconic complex at Reforma 305 is nearly empty, its offices vacated, its corridors silent, its final sunset marked by a symbolic gesture: the U.S. Marines lowering the American flag from its mast for the last time.

In that intimate ceremony, Ambassador Ronald Johnson received the folded flag—a simple but powerful act that encapsulates six decades of diplomacy, crisis response, collaboration, and cultural exchange. That moment did more than say goodbye to a building. It opened the door to a new era.

And the next chapter has a name: the New U.S. Embassy in Polanco.

A Closure Loaded With History

Few buildings in Mexico City embody as many stories as the Reforma embassy. Over six decades it witnessed Cold War tensions, NAFTA negotiations, security partnerships, cultural exchanges, and millions of visa applications. Its geometric façade watched generations line up for student dreams, business aspirations, family reunions, and life-changing migrations.

Now, Reforma 305 stands almost hollow—an empty shell that once pulsed with the daily activity of one of the busiest U.S. consular operations in the world.

The Embassy’s farewell message says it best:

“A chapter that marked decades of history comes to an end… and a brand-new one is about to begin.”

Polanco: A New Center of Gravity

Beginning November 24, 2025, all consular appointments—including immigrant and non-immigrant visas—will take place at the new facility in Colonia Irrigación, a modern complex designed to meet security, accessibility and operational needs for the next generation of U.S.–Mexico relations.

Key new location details

The Embassy emphasizes that there is no need to reschedule. If your appointment is set for any date after November 24, it will automatically take place at the new Polanco complex.

Important Rules for Visitors

Security protocols remain strict—and even more relevant in the new location. Before arriving, visitors should remember:

🚫 Items not allowed inside:

  • Cellphones
  • Tablets
  • Smartwatches
  • Headphones
  • Liquids of any kind
  • The Embassy will not store personal belongings, so planning ahead is essential. For many applicants—especially first-timers—this will require extra preparation and coordination.

Why the Move Matters

This relocation is more than a logistical update; it’s a symbolic reset. Reforming the physical footprint of U.S. diplomacy in Mexico signals:

  • Modernized consular operations capable of handling massive demand.
  • Stronger security and infrastructure, aligned with global standards.
  • A renewed long-term commitment to U.S.–Mexico collaboration.

Polanco’s new diplomatic corridor—already home to several embassies—offers a setting that balances accessibility, modernization and urban safety. It is a strategic, deliberate migration toward the future.

But the transition also carries emotional weight. For millions of Mexicans, Reforma 305 was the backdrop of life-defining moments. The old embassy is etched into personal histories: visas won, visas denied, reunions enabled, studies abroad launched. Moving away from Reforma closes a collective memory shared across generations.

A New Stage Begins

The symbolic lowering of the flag at Reforma was not a farewell—it was a baton pass. A reminder that diplomacy evolves, cities shift, and buildings age, but the human stories that connect nations remain constant.

The New U.S. Embassy in Polanco is not just a new address. It is the reset button on a relationship that continues to redefine North America.

A new building. A new beginning. And, for many, the next chapter in their journey across borders.
